Valentine’s Day: Love, Romance and Red Roses
Spring is just around the corner and love is in the air. If you are lucky enough to be in an established, long-term partnership, or hoping to set the wheels in motion and declare your love for someone this Valentine’s Day then you cannot go wrong by saying it with flowers.
Each year florists everywhere have the wonderful job of delivering beautiful bouquets and dazzling red roses, seeing first-hand the happiness they can bring.
But have you ever wondered why we celebrate Valentine’s Day and why red roses are such a symbol of love?
Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Over time many different stories and tales have evolved to explain the origins of Valentine’s Day. One of the most popular focuses on a priest called Valentine who lived in the third century in Rome.
The emperor at the time had declared that men were not allowed to marry if they were soldiers. Valentine, who was a local priest, felt this unfair so he arranged to marry many happy couples in secret. Once this was discovered by the emperor, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.
It was during this imprisonment that some say he restored the eyesight of the daughter of the man in charge of the jail and they fell in love. Others say she simply visited him and showed him kindness. On the day he was executed he sent her a love letter signed ‘from your Valentine.’ That day was February 14th.
Whatever the truth and whatever really happened all those years ago, the one thing we can be sure of from historical documents dating from that time, is that Valentine’s Day was not celebrated in the way that we have come to know until many years later.
Why do we send Valentine cards?
The 1800’s saw the start of mass production of greetings cards which were particularly popular with Victorian ladies, and it soon became custom to send valentine cards to someone special along with flowers or chocolates too.
Why red roses?
Red is known for evoking a sense of romance and passion and is the classic way to prove your love so if you want to make sure your sweetheart knows just how much you love them then red roses are the way to go.
At Courts we have lots of beautiful ideas that will make someone feel very special. Whilst the majority of people choose to send red roses or flowers, we can help you to create something more bespoke with any colour option.
Some people love to incorporate a significant colour that has special meaning to them and white, pink, yellow and peach make a beautiful alternative gift. Others like to recreate a similar selection of flowers they had in their wedding bouquet using flowers such as lilies.

How do we ensure we have enough red roses?
This is one of the reasons we recommend always using a professional florist. We start to prepare well ahead ensuring we have plenty of stock to accommodate our orders and use several different suppliers for peace of mind. This is especially important for those orders we know will come in at the very last minute! Rest assured our extensive experience in this industry means we know just how to judge things to get it right although it is true that it can be a bit stressful at times. Valentine’s Day is one of our favourite times of the year and we absolutely love what we do, seeing the reactions our flowers get and we would not have it any other way.
Order ahead
Our advice is to always order ahead where possible. We typically make between 200 and 300 deliveries each Valentine’s Day and usually order between 3000 and 4000 red roses. If your preference is the softer colour palette we have you covered, as we order between 500-600 each of white, pink, peach, yellow and lilac roses along with a wide range of other beautiful flowers.
It’s not just roses though, as many people choose a beautiful mix of their favourite fresh flowers instead.
It is all hands-on deck for several days beforehand receiving stock, storing and preparing the stems to time it so that they only open after delivery and then creating our fabulous range of Valentine floral gifts. This could be anything from a classic and simple single boxed red rose to a dozen or even two dozen beautiful long-stemmed red roses or something from our valentine range such as the popular red rose hat box.
Special gift options
Did you know we offer luxury handmade candles, boxed chocolates and a wide range of alcoholic gifts all year round? Choose from: champagne, prosecco, red, white and rose wine or a mixed gin selection box. Make it even more romantic with one of our cute Valentine teddies.
